I think if we are honest, we all struggle with feeling like we are not enough, in one way or another. We wouldn’t have stores full of “just because I think it will change how I feel about myself” stuff if we didn’t all fight feelings of “less than” in one way or another. “You are not enough” has to be one of the things the enemy likes to whisper in our ears more than almost anything else.
And why not? It works very well to keep us chasing after anything and everything we can to make those feelings go away. After all, it can be so much easier to listen to the enemy than it is to believe the truth of what God says.
But truth is so much better, and the truth is, God is satisfied with His children because He is satisfied with Jesus.
Isaiah 53:11. This one verse describes with absolute perfection what the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus did for the believer: it made us enough because God was satisfied by everything Jesus did. “After the suffering of his soul, he will see the light of life and be satisfied; by his knowledge my righteous servant will justify many and he will bear their iniquities.”
In the Hebrew, the word “satisfied” is saba` (pronounced sä·vah'), and it means “to be satisfied, be sated, be fulfilled, be surfeited.”
In this verse in Isaiah 53, it refers to the eye being satisfied with seeing. God saw the suffering of Jesus because of our sins, and He declared, “That’s enough!” The price had been paid for our sins, with more than enough to spare, and Jesus could then declare from the cross, “It is finished” (John 19:30a).
From the time the system of sacrifices was instituted for the Israelites in the desert, no sacrifice was ever enough. Every sacrifice had to be repeated, over and over again, because sin was always present. But Jesus finished what we never could, once and for all, so we could be enough. (Hebrews 10:1-18)
Because of Jesus, God could be our God of grace without being any less our God of justice. And grace says, “You are enough. No, you are more than enough.”
